Coron Island which is located at the
northern tip of Palawan in the Philippines, is a perfect dive spot and known
for its several Japanese shipwrecks World War II vintage. Coron is one the
first island that was attacked by the American forces in its bid to recapture
the Philippines against the Japanese invaders during World War II. As such,
this island is one of the most visited destinations for wreck diving in the
Philippines.
The sections around the wrecks have
beautiful rock formations which is also an excellent spot for snorkeling
opportunities. The waters are so clear, underwater visibility extends up to 80
feet. The water is usually calm, with almost no current. No wonder Coron is
listed in Forbes Traveler Magazine’s top 10 best scuba diving sites in the
world.
Popular Wreck Diving Sites in Coron
Bay include the Irako Wreck, Okikawa Maru Wreck, Akitsushima Wreck, Kogyo Maru
Wreck, Olympia Maru Wreck, Kyokuzan Maru Wreck, East Tangat Gunboat Wreck (real
name of the ship, Teru-Kaze Maru, was recently discovered by a group of Dutch
divers, who spent a couple of days digging into bottom sand around the stern),
Nanshin Maru Wreck, Lusong Gunboat Wreck and Skeleton Wreck.
Aside from diving spots, Coron
Island has numerous caves and seven lagoons, more than 200 islands and islets
with white sand beaches and therapeutic hot springs.
The island is also famous for mountain hiking. Popular trail is that of Mount Tapyas, which stands more than 2,000 feet above sea level. 719 concrete steps where built along the slopes of the mountain. Once at the top of Mt. Tapyas, one can witness a breathtaking view of the island
