One of the most popular tourist destinations
in Albay is the “Cagsawa Ruins”. These
are the remnants of a Franciscan church, the Cagsawa church, which was built in
1724. The said church was destroyed by
an eruption of Mayon Volcano in 1814. It was believed that the eruption killed
an estimated 1,200 people and buried the town of Cagsawa with ash. According to
the survivors, residents of Cagsawa sought refuge in the church, but were also
killed by either pyroclastic flows or lahar. As of today, only the belfry and
some parts of the church can be seen and is a famous landmark in the park.
